Gun Violence Concern in Pienaar
Written by Xola Magagula on April 17, 2026
The South African Police Service has issued an urgent warning over rising nighttime shootings in Pienaar, raising concern about the number of illegal firearms circulating in the area.
Speaking during a provincial breakfast show hosted by Two6, Sergeant Thembe confirmed that police have been receiving increasing reports of random gunfire at night, creating fear among residents.
She also highlighted a recent incident where a woman was injured after a stray bullet entered her home through the roof and struck her in the arm. Fortunately, the injury was not life-threatening, but it exposed the serious risks posed by indiscriminate shootings.
In a related development, Sergeant Thembe revealed that police recently arrested a 59-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man after an illegal firearm was discovered at the elderly woman’s home. The weapon was recovered following information provided to the police. It remains unclear whether the woman was keeping the firearm for the younger man or if it was being rented out. Both suspects are not related and have since been taken into custody.
Sergeant Thembe urged the Pienaar community to report all incidents of gunfire and suspicious activity to the police, stressing that public cooperation is key to removing illegal firearms and improving safety.
