Pienaar Schools Under Threat as Learner Gangs Grow in Numbers

Concerns are growing in Pienaar as learner gangs continue to spread across local schools, with reports of intimidation and violence targeting other learners.
According to Sergeant Themba, who spoke during an interview today, several gangs have been identified operating among learners from both Pienaar high and primary schools. These include Gang 100, Gang 50, Gang 7, Gang West, and Gang Hendriks.
Sergeant Themba revealed that these groups are growing in number, with some learners joining not necessarily out of choice, but for protection against rival gangs. “Some of the children feel safer being part of a group because they fear being targeted if they are alone,” she said.
Police have already been called to intervene at one of the schools in Pienaar following a gang-related incident. Authorities say the situation is being closely monitored to prevent further escalation. The rise in learner gangs has raised serious concerns about safety within school environments, with fears that violence could become more frequent if not addressed.
Sergeant Themba has urged parents and guardians to take action if their children are affected. “Parents must not stay silent. If your child is injured or threatened, open a case with the police so that we can act,” she emphasized. She also encouraged parents to remain actively involved in their children’s lives by monitoring their behaviour, friendships, and any warning signs that may indicate gang involvement.
Police and community members are calling for a united effort to tackle the issue, stressing that schools must remain safe spaces for learning, not breeding grounds for violence.
